Sydney Cup (G2)

All The Stars On Show For Wenty's Big Night

By Jeff Collerson
Unbeaten Wentworth Park stayer Miss Ezmae came through her final trial with flying colours and is at her peak for her mouth-watering clash with Stanley Road, Zipping Niseko and Super Estrella in Saturday night's 720m Sydney Cup final at Wentworth Park.

Miss Ezmae, a triple track record holder, has won each of her two Wentworth Park 720m starts with a personal best time of 42.29, while Stanley Road has clocked 41.92, Super Estrella 42.04 and Zipping Niseko 42.07.

"I trialled Miss Ezmae over 570m at Temora on Tuesday and she went extra well,'' trainer Jack Smith said.

"I don't think box four will worry her on Saturday night because she is a pretty reliable beginner and there is not much early pace around her.

"My only concern is that Miss Ezmae and Super Estrella, another front runner, might hack at each other in the early stages.

"So I'm hoping My Ezmae can either lead or sit in second spot behind Super Estrella like she did when she won at Wentworth Park on September 29.''

Wentworth Park Gold Cup winner Zipping Niseko, who was having her first long distance race since July when second to Super Estrella in the October 6 Cup heats, has drawn box one.

"Sometimes a first-up long distance run can flatten a dog but Zipping Niseko looks a million dollars and from her great draw I expect her to run a big race,'' trainer Jason Magri said.

Association Cup winner Stanley Road is Australia's top stayer but he has drawn poorly in box five because he lacks early pace and likes to find the fence.

But given a clear run on the rails none of his rivals would be likely to stave off Mark Gatt's Stanley Road in the home straight.

Michael Hardman is the only trainer with two finalists in Saturday's Ladbrokes Peter Mosman Opal and can't choose between Fernando's Glory (pictured, box two) and Analysing (box seven).

"Fernando's Glory is faster but while she has drawn nicely she has to contend with a quick beginner, She's Salacious, in box one,'' Hardman said.

"Things could get a bit messy near the fence which is why Analysing, who is well drawn out wide, could win.

"Fernando's Glory ran 29.71 winning her heat but while Analysing only clocked 29.96, she will run that time every day of the week.''

Hardman has a healthy respect for Northern Rivers’ bitch Sophie Zarr Wren, who has box eight.

Her trainer Reg Gardoll said: "She has her best draw but while she can accelerate she is not a flash beginner and I'm not sure she is up to this class.

"I was disappointed with her second to She's Salacious in 30.03 in her heat when she ran off on the first turn.

"I had expected Sophie Zarr Wren to go better because she clocked 29.80 in a trial at Wentworth Park a week earlier.''

Andrew Bell, who has trained more than 200 winners this year, will have his first group race starter when Cop Magnet exits box three in Saturday's Ladbrokes Vic Peters Classic final.

Cop Magnet recorded a scorching first split of 5.39 when he made the pace before being run down by Zipping Kansas in his heat and Bell is banking on him being the early leader again.

"Cop Magnet is probably the slowest dog in the race but he has been nailing the start consistently so has a good chance if he can be in front at the first turn,'' Bell said.

"He can't win if Bandit Ned is sitting on his hammer on the back straight and I'm also frightened of fastest heat winner Aston Barak.

"Cop Magnet has beaten Aston Barak in two of their past three clashes but in those races Aston Barak drew inside and my dog chopped him off at the first turn.

"It could be a different story on Saturday because Aston Barak is perfectly drawn in box eight.''

Zipping Kansas bungled the start but got a dream run at the first turn when he won his heat in 29.89 and is chasing his eighth win in 11 starts in the final.

"He slipped badly coming out of the boxes in his heat and if he comes out with them in the final Zipping Kansas has a great show,'' trainer Jason Magri said.

"His box five draw might not be too bad because Bandit Ned, who has drawn six, will stay wide.''

Bandit Ned is undefeated in five Wentworth Park races where his personal best time of 29.55 has not been matched by any of his rivals although Aston Barak won his heat in 29.60.
