Ricciardo Has A Flying Lap Around Dapto

By Michael Cowley
Just a week out from the heats of the Group 1 Sportsbet Dapto Megastar, brilliant young sprinter Flying Ricciardo took a spin around the South Coast circuit on Thursday night and showed he will be a major player in the $75,000 to the winner series.

The Kristy Sultana-trained Flying Ricciardo which has now won 17 of 21 starts, clocked an overall time of 29.47s, with sectionals of 5.27s, 16.85s and a run home of 12.62s.

Also trialling on the night before the Dapto card were the Peter Lagogiane-trained Shetland, winner of the TAB Million Dollar Chase Consolation last month, and Mick Hardman’s promising sprinter Nangar Rust.

Nangar Rust, while not as quick early as Flying Ricciardo, did run home faster and recorded a slightly quicker overall time 29.42s.

To put the times into context, only one dog has run quicker in a race at Dapto in 2020, that being Tennessee Tiger whose 29.35s was just 0.01s outside the track record of Fantastic Dotty set back in 2015.

By comparison, Good Odds Harada won last year’s Dapto Megastar final in 29.58s.

Shetland clocked 29.87s at his first look at the track, posting 5.37s, 17.03s and coming home in 12.84s.

Heats of the Megastar will be held next Thursday December 3. Nominations close on Monday at 9am. The final will be held on December 10.
