Greyhound Clubs Australia conducts the National Sprint and Distance Championships annually. State heats and Finals are staged in each State. The venue for Grand Finals is rotated around the country, with Perth hosting the 2019 Nationals.

The first National Distance Championships was held in 1969 at Wentworth Park and won by Victorian stayer Amerigo Lady.

Some of the past winners include: Dotie Wilson (1975), Boronia Blossom (1995 & 1996) Boomeroo (2002), Miata (2012), Fanta Bale (2017) and Tornado Tears (2018).

Tornado Tears was a short-priced favourite to go back to back in 2019 in Perth, but local stayer Reidy’s Runner got the prize.

On her home track in 2022 it was Super Estrella who finally gave David Smith his first Group 1 victory as a trainer with a brilliant win in the Distance Championship Final.

It was the beginning in many ways of the dominance of Super Estrella as she would break the Wentworth Park track record soon after then claim the Sydney Cup on MDC Grand Final night.
