General Information
Greyhound Identification Cards to replace the old paper Certificate of Registration.
As you would be aware, over the past few months GRNSW has been conducting a large number of microchipping sessions around the state as the first step towards simplifying the identification process and race day procedures for racing in NSW. By introducing microchipping in NSW, GRNSW is now able to take advantage of the benefits that the new microchip technology can provide, and in turn we can provide more efficient services to our members.
Over the coming 12 months, GRNSW will be continually working to streamline many of the current race day kennelling and identification procedures. We understand that some of these changes will take time to get used to and we ask for your understanding and patience during this time.
The first step to streamlining race day kennelling procedures is speeding up the greyhound identification process. Your new Greyhound Identification Card and the unique microchip that your greyhound now has are essential for race day identification moving forward.
Below is a general overview of what will now happen at kennelling time on a race day:
1.    Greyhound is presented to the Identification Official at kennelling
2.    Greyhound Identification Card is also presented to Identification Official
3.    Identification Official scans the greyhound to obtain the unique microchip number
4.    This number is cross-checked with the race day database and Greyhound Identification Card to identify the greyhound
5.    Other greyhound particulars (earbrand, colour, trainer etc) are verified
6.    Greyhound identification is confirmed
7.    Greyhound is weighed – as per current procedures
8.    Weight is recorded in weight book – as per current procedures
9.    Greyhound is presented to the on-course Vet for vetting – as per current procedures
10. Kennel pass is allocated – as per current procedures
11. Greyhound is kennelled prior to racing – as per current procedures.
As the new race day kennelling procedures are introduced the Steward present on race day will be more than happy to explain any of the new requirements and to answer any questions.
As part of these changes there will be a new style of GRNSW Weight Book. This new weight book includes four (4) security protected pages in the middle that GRNSW Stewards and racing officials will use to record any offence records or strapping notations that were previously placed on the back of the Certificate of Registration.
Along with the new weight book comes a protective plastic cover with slots for both your Greyhound Identification Card and your licence card.
Other important points that you should know as a result of the introduction of the new Greyhound Identification Card are:
  • The ‘Card Number’ on the front right hand side of your Greyhound Identification Card is the equivalent to the old certificate number. This is the number that you should reference when nominating your greyhound;
  • You are required to present your Greyhound Identification Card each time the greyhound races, failure to do so may result in the greyhound being scratched;
  • If you intend to race your greyhound interstate prior to 1 January 2012, you will need to contact GRNSW to have your greyhound marked and a paper Certificate of Registration issued. Interstate bodies will not accept the new Greyhound Identification Card until 1 January 2012;
  • In the past when you transferred your greyhound you were required to send in the Certificate of Registration to GRNSW along with the transfer application. This is no longer necessary. When transferring your greyhound, you are still required to send in the ‘Application Form to Transfer a Named & Registered Greyhound’ and the prescribed fee, however, the greyhound’s Identification Card should be given to the new owner when the greyhound changes hands; and
  • Should you misplace or destroy your Greyhound Identification Card, a Statutory Declaration must be completed and sent to GRNSW with a $41 fee for the issue of a replacement card.
Please also be advised that GRNSW will not be sending out copies of Transfer Forms and Kennel Notification Forms when you receive your new Greyhound Identification Card. To access these forms, please visit our website at www.thedogs.com.au and click on the ‘Member Services’ tab at the top of the screen. A drop down menu will then display all the forms and documents you need. Alternatively, if you do not have access to the internet, please see your local club for copies of these forms, or contact the GRNSW Member Services Team on (02) 8767 0500 and we can post some forms out to you.
Finally, to assist owners and trainers who have many greyhounds and therefore will have a number of Greyhound Identification Cards, GRNSW has available for purchase a high quality Greyhound Identification Card Holder (See below) with the capacity to store 128 cards.
These Card Holders can be purchased online here using your credit card or you can download an order form here and mail to GRNSW with your purchase details.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding any of the above information, please speak with your local Steward or contact GRNSW on (02) 8767 0500 for assistance.

  • Proposed NSW Grading Policy

    In coming weeks GRNSW will move to grading meetings on its new OzChase system. To coincide with this change GRNSW is moving to one combined NSW Grading Policy, rather than maintaining separate TAB and Non-TAB policies. Feedback on the changes, particularly as they relate to Non-TAB grading, is now called for.
