Do you have a life-changing dog...?
Have you got a dog you think just doesn’t seem interested in racing and would just prefer to be changing someone’s life for the better?

Give him/her the best chance in life by considering the Greyhounds As Pets program!

Greyhounds are more than just race dogs; they have proved without question they can, and do, excel in other roles and environments. We currently have
dogs in Assistance Dogs Australia, various retirement villages and are looking for more prospective homes and environments to get our dogs into.

Salt (below) & Laurie (last month’s dog of the month), both still available for adoption, have been part of the blood donor program at Small Animal
Specialist Hospital (SASH) in North Ryde.

Interested participants can find the 'Registration of Interest' form here.

Dog Of The Month: Salt (cat friendly)
Salt is a stunning white and black boy and, as his name implies, is full of flavour. He is a greyhound who will be best suited to a more active home as
he can sometimes be a bit of a goofball!

As he is quite a big dog and has more energy than the average couch potato greyhound, a home with no small children would suit better.

In saying that, Salt has a wonderful temperament and this has been apparent through his participation as a novice canine blood donor at Small Animal
Specialist Hospital in North Ryde, which helps saves the lives of other dogs. He’s been cat tested and will be continually exposed to cats while he is in
our care.

Salt is ready for adoption now!

Call us on 1800 696 377 or email on gap@grnsw.com.au if you or anyone you know may be interested in adopting Salt!

65 Roses Race Meetings
Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) and Cystic Fibrosis NSW are joining forces this month to help raise funds to improve the quality of life of people living
with Cystic Fibrosis.

Last year more than $40 000 was raised, supported by the local communities, clubs and participants of greyhound racing.

May: The Month Of Walkies In Warm Coats
May is a beautiful time of year with the autumn leaves changing colour and the crisp mornings. While you’re rugging up, please remember to rug your greyhound(s) too!

With their thin skin and minimal body fat, they may be feeling the cold even before you feel anything!

There are several types of Greyhound coats available from fleece-type to raincoats, from purely functional to utterly fashionable!

What you end up deciding on depends on the environment your greyhound is living in. Just remember that greyhounds have a unique body shape and going with a ‘greyhound specific’ coat may be a lot more effective than trying to fit a greyhound to a coat.

Pictured below: Faith with her two sisters in their PJs.

Another option to buying is making your own greyhound coat! There are a multitude of websites with step-by-step instructions of how to make a coat for your beloved hound. Here’s one we particularly like, by using an old fleece vest - http://www.instructables.com/id/Greyhound-coat-from-old-fleece-vest/

Check out this fancy coat that was custom-made by his adopter’s friend for King, our beautiful black boy who featured in last month’s newsletter.

Part of the privilege of sharing your life with a Greyhound is helping to change public perception of the greyhound breed and to show people what Greyhounds are REALLY like in the home/family environment.

If you have a photo of your pet greyhound out & about in a coat or a custom made piece, please send it to Simone via email (sli@grnsw.com.au) or post it on our Facebook page - www.facebook.com/GAPNSW

What Else Can I Do?
Do you find yourself wondering how else you can help get the Greyhound breed out there in your community? Here are some ideas for foster carers and adopters:

1. Register Your Greyhound To Become A Canine Blood Donor

Vet clinics such as the Small Animal Specialist Hospital (SASH) at North Ryde have a canine blood donation program where the donated blood is used to save the lives of dogs who have been in accidents, have unfortunately eaten some type of poison or have an auto-immune disease. The requirements of different clinics vary slightly so it is best to contact them directly for more information.

SASH require dogs who wish to become blood donors to be healthy, vaccinations up to date, between 2-8years old, weigh at least 25kg (and not overweight) and able to lie still for 5-10 minutes.

More details about SASH’s blood donor program can be found via this link http://www.sashvets.com/services/bloodbank.shtml

2. Organise A Local Greyhound Walking Group

Greyhounds LOVE other Greyhounds! Although our greyhounds are vigorously tested with small dogs and occasionally cats, there’s nothing like witnessing your greyhound meeting another Greyhound it hasn’t met before.

As you may know, with the amount of attention you may already receive from bringing one or two of your Greyhounds out, there is even more potential for Greyhounds on mass to generate a lot of interest (and hopefully adoptions) from curious on-lookers.

In America, a group of passionate greyhound lovers called the ‘Greyhound Adventures and Networking Group of Greater Boston, Inc.’ regularly meet for mass greyhound walkies with the objectives of "creating opportunities to network with the greyhound community and raise awareness of the greyhound as a companion animal". They started off as a few greyhound owners who shared the same passion and today they average around 30 Greyhounds and their owners on their weekly walks.

For more information visit: http://greyhoundadventures.org/index.html

3. Expand Your Knowledge By Attending Dog Courses And Seminars

There are frequently dog-related courses run by different organizations such as TAFE, which are available to the public. By attending these and expanding your knowledge in areas such as dog behaviour, you will be better equipped to understanding your greyhound and be able to help him/her reach her full potential, apart from the perfected role of full-time couch lizard!

Some of the courses are also an opportunity to get your greyhound into activities which you may never have initially imagined possible, such as agility, flyball and obedience.

Visit http://www.greenhounds.com.au/Calendar/Events.aspx  for information on a few courses coming up.

GRNSW and TAFE NSW has launched a pilot training a Certificate 2 in Racing (Greyhounds) which aims to provide new entrants to the greyhound racing industry with the skills and knowledge to further their career.

Thank You Owners And Owner/Trainers
Greyhounds As Pets wants to sincerely thank all the owners and trainers who have taken the initiative to give their dogs another opportunity by contacting us and getting in the appropriate paperwork. Remember to get your dogs on our waiting list as soon as possible so that by the time they have had their last trial/race, the waiting time for you will be significantly shorter.

One amazing recent project taken on by a responsible owner, Gary Smith, took the concept of Greyhounds As Pets to the general public through a story on PRIME7 Wagga Wagga at their local school in Nangus.

Dog Of The Month - Laurie
Laurie is a super handsome lad, red fawn in colour and nearly five years of age. He has cute floppy ears and a lovely personality. He gets on well with other dogs and adapts well to new surrounds. Laurie was a terrific racer in his time and now ready for life in the slightly slower lane! Laurie would suit a family with older children or no children, singles, couples etc.
Laurie is available for adoption now!

How To Help Your Retired Or Non-Racing Greyhound Become A Winner In The Greyhounds As Pets Program (Part 3)
Following the March issue of the E-Chaser, here is the next section of information on how you, as an owner/trainer can help your greyhound(s) be more suitable for our program.

Surrendering Of Greyhounds To Pounds
Every year a significant number of greyhounds are surrendered and sometimes dumped in pounds. The resources of pounds and shelters are already overstretched and in some areas greyhounds make up a substantial number of all dogs taken in. Some greyhounds are ‘rescued’ from pounds by well-meaning groups who will re-home these greyhounds into the community without appropriate assessments being undertaken. Not all greyhounds make suitable pets and are therefore a safety risk when outside a racing kennel environment with inexperienced people.

The surrendering of greyhounds to pounds gives the entire industry a bad reputation and does nothing to help the image of the breed, which already suffers from many negative misconceptions. With the introduction of microchipping for all greyhounds whelped after 1 January 2011, a greyhound can now be tracked throughout its entire lifecycle enabling GRNSW to monitor all greyhounds in compliance with Greyhound Rule GAR106(3) which states:
“At any time after the registration of a litter, the last registered owner or person responsible for the greyhound at the relevant time, shall, within ten working days, notify the Controlling Body by lodging of the prescribed form, if that greyhound has transferred ownership, been retired as a pet or a breeding greyhound, been transferred to an adoption program, exported, surrendered to another agency, been humanely euthanised by a veterinary surgeon or deceased.”

This means that as a greyhound owner you are responsible for the well-being of your greyhound throughout its entire lifecycle.  By planning ahead and registering your Greyhound early with GAP, you can avoid long delays getting your greyhound into the program.

The industry needs to support GAP to increase the number of greyhounds being re-homed and reduce the wastage to help improve the image of the breed and the industry.

Have you met Buster?
Buster is one of those dogs who makes everyone he says hello to fall in love with him.

With his tail never still and his sweet laid back demeanour, Buster easily went on to obtain his Greenhound muzzling exemption. He was such a charming and standout dog, that Assistance Dogs Australia recently adopted him as their new Ambassador Dog.

He has already been along to a a number of Assistance Dogs Australia events such as the Optus RockCorps Day (pictured) and has more lined up.

How to help your retired or non-racing greyhound become a winner in the Greyhounds As Pets Program (part 2)
Following the February issue of the E-Chaser, here is the next section of information on how you as an owner/trainer can help your greyhound(s) be more suitable for our program.

This month we will provide you with tips on how to help you determine which greyhounds might be suitable and how to get them ready for the big change.”

Age:  Young pups (as long as they are healthy) are often the easiest to find homes for.  If you have a pup that is the runt, or pups from an unwanted litter, we are able to take them from eight weeks of age. We like to get them straight into homes.  If you contact us when they are new born (or as young as is practical) we can start making the arrangements.  We accept healthy greyhounds up to the age of seven years as re-homing does become more difficult over this age but older greyhounds will be looked at on a case by case basis.

Let Down Period:  With greyhounds that have trialled or raced, it is important for them to ‘let down’ after they have been in ‘race mode’.  We recommend that you enable your greyhound to get some rest and relaxation for six weeks and maybe allow them to put on a bit of weight before they enter the programme.

Handling:  Get your greyhound to walk nicely on lead at your side. It does not have to be an obedience champion but a greyhound that is easy for an inexperienced owner to handle is a better adoption prospect.

New Environments and People:  Start looking at how your greyhound copes with new environments. Let your greyhound loose in your backyard and if possible, into the house for short periods. Take your greyhound for walks to the shops, past the local school, through suburban streets or beside a busy road. Under strict supervision, introduce your greyhound to other people and children. If your greyhound is timid or scared, it is unlikely to cope with the transition to being a pet.

Other Dogs:  If you have other dogs around your property, carefully (with the greyhound muzzled and behind a fence) introduce them and see how the greyhound reacts.  If it licks its lips, trembles, lunges, stares or barks, it is unlikely to make it in the program.  You can try introducing it to a range of dogs, but if it does not settle down very quickly it is not likely to succeed as a pet.  If your greyhound socialises well with your own pet dogs, take it for street walks (muzzled) and see how it reacts to strange dogs it meets.  We find that some greyhounds won’t react to the pet that lives on the property as they regard them as family but unfamiliar dogs may be a different story.  As they are used to being around other greyhounds in a racing kennel environment, bigger breeds of dog are generally not a problem. Issues often arise with small fluffy breeds of dogs that may be viewed as prey instead of just another dog.

Cats:  If your greyhound does not like cats, this does not preclude them from being accepted into GAP. However, there is always a long list of people requiring cat tolerant Greyhounds so if you have one, it is an added bonus.

Update on Greyhounds As Pets Waiting List
Due to unforeseen circumstances, there has been a temporary delay in taking in greyhounds for the Greyhounds As Pets program. We will endeavour to keep owner/trainers updated on the situation and aim to keep the waiting time as short as possible. We would like to thank you sincerely for your understanding during this time.

Got Dogs....?
Have you got a dog which you think just doesn’t seem interested in racing and would just prefer to be lounging around on someone’s couch? Give him/her the best chance in life by considering the Greyhounds As Pets program.

Interested participants can find the “Registration of Interest” form here.

Remember that if:

• You are an owner, you can register your greyhound into our program so that once your dog finishes racing, he/she has the option of potentially being adopted as a retired race dog.

• You are a breeder, you can register your whole litter with us and their spots can be held for them through their racing carers and offered as an option for their new owners after retirement.

• You are a trainer, you can also utilise our program to register dogs, offering owners an alternative career.

If you already have greyhounds on the Greyhounds As Pets waiting list, please make sure that their C5 vaccination is up to date to help us with faster transition of dogs through our program. We look forward to hearing from you for you to inform us that your dog is ready to go and we will then be in touch soon after to make arrangements for your dog/s to come in.

How to help your retired or non-racing greyhound become a winner in the Greyhounds As Pets Program (part 1)
In the next few issues of the E-Chaser, we will be including some information on how you as an owner/trainer can help your greyhound(s) be more suitable for our program.

In the racing world, you would not expect to achieve success with your greyhound without planning and preparation.  The same goes if you want your greyhound to be a winner in the Greyhounds As Pets program.  There are many ways you can assist your greyhound to pass the behavioural assessment which is the first step for a greyhound entering the program before going on to a happy, healthy life in a loving pet home.

There are many reasons why a greyhound may not be actively involved in racing and might be ready to come into the GAP program.  It may have suffered a career ending injury, ongoing minor injuries or be of an age to retire.  Bitches may have been used for breeding and are now going to be rested.  Not every greyhound is suited to the racing career chosen for them and younger greyhounds may be non-chasers or a bit slow for racing.

While we would love to re-home every greyhound that comes into the program, it is a sad fact that some are simply not well suited to such a "career change".  The life of a pet is very different to life as most greyhounds know it.  Walks in different and potentially busy areas, meeting other "strange looking" dogs and possibly interacting with children, all make up the life of the average pet dog.

The other main difference is the experience of those who adopt dogs. Greyhound owners and trainers have a lot of experience handling and working with dogs.

Unfortunately, while we educate adopters in dog ownership, many are not nearly so experienced.  What this means is that your greyhounds need to be able to cope with changeable environments, be accepting of other dogs (particularly small fluffy ones) and be easy enough for the average person to handle.

You are likely to know your greyhound pretty well in terms of its racing ability.  However, we have found that many owners or trainers have trouble picking which of their greyhounds are most likely to pass the behavioural assessment and make it as a successful pet.

Stay tuned for the next section - "Tips and Tricks to help you determine which greyhounds might be suitable and how to get them ready for the big change."

Foster carers
Foster carers are incredibly vital to our program and with the holiday season underway, people are more likely to be going away and less likely to be able to foster a dog for the minimum six week period.

If you know any family or friends who you know are not going away and may be interested in getting a dog but may not be ready to commit to the whole lifetime of the dog, becoming a foster carer may be just the thing for them.

Please contact us on (02) 8767 0534 if you or someone you know can help.

Greenhound of the month
Rosie is a petite three year old female who has been made for adventure. At such a young age, she has already decided that racing just isn't for her and continued her journey at Assistance Dogs Australia where she picked up valuable life skills and proceeded to learn more about how to be a pet dog.

She is a Greenhound who is ready to go on another muzzle-free adventure, whether it is meeting new doggie friends and their humans or going to new places with new skills to pick up and new scents to sniff.

Please contact us on 1800 696 377 or gap@grnsw.com.au if you are interested in adopting Rosie.

Foster carers for the Christmas season
Foster carers are incredibly vital to our program and with the holiday season coming up people are more likely to be going away and less likely to be able to foster a dog for the minimum six weeks period. If you know any family or friends who are not going away and may be interested in getting a dog without a full time commitment, becoming a foster carer may be just the thing for them.

November 2012

Adoptions have been going extremely well this past month with many of the dogs in our program currently accounted for, with their new homes waiting for them to complete their foster period. We are excitedly anticipating that adoption and fostering will continue to be steady through November especially with the onset of the holiday season.

If you have greyhounds on the Greyhounds As Pets waiting list, please make sure that their C5 vaccination is up to date to help us with faster transition of dogs through our program. We look forward to hearing from you to inform us that your dog is ready to go and we will then be in touch soon after to make arrangements for your dog(s) to come in.

Wentworth Park Community Games – 21 October
Wentworth Park Community Games was a successful day with the gorgeous Sandy (left), taking out both ‘Best Female Grey’ and overall ‘Grey of the Day’ for the second year running. Bear (right) took the ‘Best Male Grey’ title. With both winners coming from the same family, we’re thinking they must be doing something right.

Newcastle West Petbarn Family Fun Day – 27 October
Greyhounds As Pets was invited to Newcastle West Petbarn’s Family Fun Day where Greenhound Izzy was cordially greeted by staff, pet lovers and a fairy. A lot of public interest in our program was generated on the day.

We would like to thank Michael, Sarah and the rest of the Petbarn staff for putting on a fundraising BBQ, as well as members of the public for their generous donations.

Greenhounds
Greenhounds has just approved more Greenhound Assessors which means greater coverage across NSW. Their details can be found at www.greenhounds.com.au under Current Assessors.

We are conducting another Greenhounds assessing session for Greyhounds As Pets greyhounds on 31  October.

If you know of a vet or a person with a Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services who may be interested in becoming an Approved Greenhounds Assessor, please ask them to contact Greenhounds at admin@greenhounds.com.au or (02) 8767 0519.

For current Approved Assessors, we will be presenting an in-depth profile each month so that people who are interested in the program and getting their greyhounds assessed can find out more about the assessors’ background and their motivation behind becoming a Greenhound Assessor.

November’s feature Greenhound Assessor is Gayl O’Grady from Gladesville Veterinary Hospital. Click here to see her profile.

Welcome Back Dr Lara Griffin
Greyhounds As Pets would like to welcome back former Greyhounds As Pets Co-ordinator, Dr Lara Griffin. She has returned from maternity leave and stepped into the role of Greyhounds As Pets Assessment and Training Leader. With her wealth of knowledge and experience, we are very fortunate to have her returning to the Greyhounds As Pets team.

If you have contacted GAP to enrol a dog in our program within the last three years, please contact GAP staff on (02) 8767 0534 or Simone at sli@grnsw.com.au to help keep us updated on the status of your dog.  Remember that we have information sheets available in the ‘Forms and Contacts’ section’ of our website to help owner/trainers with preparing their greyhounds for success in our program. If you have a dog or a litter that you are interested in registering in our program, please fill and send through a ‘Registration of Interest’ form as early as possible to minimise waiting time post-retirement.

October 2012

Adoptions are going steadily this month. Some of the dogs that have been adopted are Greenhounds own poster boy Rexie and Golden Oldie Greenhound Keith.  As always, we are always in need of foster carers and adopters.

Richmond TAFE Open Day
Richmond TAFE Open Day was a great opportunity for members of the public who are interested in doing an animal related TAFE course to find out about our program and to meet some of our greyhounds.

Dog of the Month
Goldie is a fun loving, playful and affectionate two-year-old fawn female who has recently entered our program and is looking for a foster carer or an adoption home. If you or anyone you know is interested in fostering or adopting Goldie, please contact GAP staff on (02) 8767 0534.

Greenhounds
Since the recent Greenhounds Assessors Course last month held at Richmond TAFE on 10/11 September, we are anticipating new certified Greenhounds Assessors available for green collar assessing. With more Greenhounds Assessors available, this will hopefully help to meet the increasing demand and greater coverage across the state.

Contact details for the latest Greenhound Assessors will be up on the Approved Assessors page soon.

As before, there is still an absence of Greenhound Assessors in the south of the state so if you know of a vet or a person with a Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services who may be interested, please ask them to contact Greenhounds at admin@greenhounds.com.au or (02) 8767 0519.

For current Approved Assessors, we will be presenting an in depth profile each month so that people who are interested in the program and getting their greyhounds assessed can find out more about the assessors’ background and their motivation behind becoming a Greenhound Assessor. October’s feature Greenhound Assessor is Kenneth Innes from Hanrob Pty Ltd. Click here to see his profile.
