Attended by the greyhound racing industry’s leading owners, trainers, breeders, administrators and members of the media, the Betfair Greyhound of the Year gala awards is the night of nights for the New South Wales greyhound racing industry.
Selected by a panel of judges comprising members of the media and officials, the Betfair Greyhound of the Year award rewards the greyhound who has continually performed at the elite level and as a result is crowned the best of the best.
The 2008 awards were held at the Hilton Hotel in Sydney, with 11 awards, including the GOTY, being announced. The awards also recognise clubs, trainers, breeders and the many volunteers, recognising the outstanding contribution made by all involved in the NSW greyhound industry.
Conducted by the NSW National Coursing Association (NCA) from 1965 until 2007, some of the sport’s biggest stars have been crowned Betfair NSW Greyhound of the Year, including the 2008 winner Miagi.
The 2008 event also saw the introduction of a new industry excellence award - the Allen Wheeler Medal – to recognise an individual who has performed with absolute distinction within the NSW greyhound industry.
Son of NSW greyhound matriarch Allen Wheeler and highly successful breeder and trainer in his own right, Paul Wheeler, was on hand to accept the accolade on his late father’s behalf and then present the first Allen Wheeler Medal to NCA Grand Patron Jack Bell.
